RIYL: Pixies, Flaming Lips, Ariel Pink, Guided By Voices, Outsider Party Punk
Super Party Fun Time! is Streight Angular‘s second full-length album, following the locally acclaimed Everyone is Syncopated EP (2012) and After and Before (2010). The album was recorded at multiple locations by the band over the last 2 years. Unconcerned with the status quo, the Boston 4 piece unleash 22 tracks of lo-fi power punk, garage nuggets, party anthems, “Hooky-punk rock’n‘roll neon explosion into the future” , and left-field pop. Think Double Nickels On a Dime, old Ariel Pink, and The Pixies with the exuberance and allegiance to good times of Andrew WK. “Will Smith”, “Machines”, and “In This City Tonight..” will suck you in upon first listen. Covering a myriad of topics, including but not limited to Zombies, Life, Miley Cyrus, Chicken Nuggets, Death, Jesus David Bowie, Yeezy and Christmas, SPFT! is as diverse lyrically as it is sonically.
With an unpredictable and interactive live show, they are a band that needs to be experienced in the flesh. Too many bands look bored playing their own music, something that will NEVER be said about Streight Angular. The ebullience of lead man Al Polk , is something to be witnessed. Streight Angular believe music should be an inclusive experience where the band and the crowd exist as one. (See “Thank you Jesus” and “Party On”) Holding as much weight in live performances as the music itself, the band thrives on the physical connection with fans. Further exemplifying their incapacity to be pigeonholed, Streight Angular have opened for the likes of Minus the Bear, Dan Deacon, Diiv, Deer Tick, J. Geils Band, Why?, Speedy Ortiz, Prefuse 73, Twin Shadow, and yes AWK.
SPFT! sheds new layers upon each listen, leaving a different track ingrained in your brain each time. Running through a breath of different styles “there’s a song for every genre and DJ off this somehow cohesive masterpiece. This beautiful alt-pop album hooks you in song after song after 22 song album” WVAU. As a wise man once said, “Life sucks and then you die!” Go listen to this record while you still have time!! Streight Angular will be visiting a town near you later 2014. Check out the brand new video for “Will Smith” below!
QUOTES & PRESS:
“Streight Angular’s ‘Will Smith’ – if it is not the best song to come out of Boston, it’s damn close.” – Dig Boston
“Good gravy, those cats in Streight Angular sure have a way with a melody. They just seem to churn out one hook-laden noise baby after another. “Will Smith” is their latest. It’s raw, distorted, messy and completely life affirming in its own weird way. Good art can do that, you know. Plus, there’s that melody…” – DayKampMusic
“Super Party Fun Time! Streight Angular’s… singular style of futuristic garage pop.” – Boston Hassle
