Secret Wild is Guillermo Sexo’s fourth album, following 2010’s acclaimed Vivid Nights and was produced by the amazing Justin Pizzoferrato (Dinosaur Jr., Thurston Moore).  Expanding on the intricate textures the band touched upon on their last album, Secret Wild is more focused and seamless in its sound.  Singer Noell Dorsey takes over a larger portion of the vocal duties with her voice shining throughout the record. Her vocal melodies are equally beautiful, haunting, and captivating, interweaving through Secret Wild‘s blend of 90’s indie rock, shoegaze, psych folk and avant garde elements exploding from the band.  Guitarist and founder Reuben Bettsak has always expressed that song craft be the main focus in Guillermo Sexo and Secret Wild stands true to his vision, while also being their most progressive, creative, and cohesive release to date.
Bettsak refines his signature big and mathy guitar lines that build upon one another as the songs progress while the bass and drums provide the necessary backing elements bringing it all together.  “Color the noise,” and “Skyline,”  bring  the dreaminess to the fold, while “Exhale,” and title track, “Secret Wild,” show the band’s increased strength in delivering 60’s inspired Folk arrangements. There’s also plenty of rockers like “Green Eyes,” “Leave Us,” and the epic stoner jam, “Smoke Signals,” which highlights bass player Elliott Anderson’s intricate lines and Jay’s gigantic beats.

Secret Wild was #19 on local web blog Ash Gray Proclamation 2011 Best of List.

#19 Guillermo Sexo – Secret Wild [Boy Girl Boy Girl] Boston’s dream pop quartet, Guillermo Sexo issued their fourth LP, Secret Wild in July and provided a melodic and discordant soundtrack to the end of summer. Noelle Dorsey takes the lion share of vocal duties with goose bump inducing affect, leaving guitarist Reuben Bettsak focused in on delivering stunning atmospherics, hypnotic guitar lines, and airy psychedelics. Secret Wild is a rich and varied offering and one of the finest things we heard in 2011.” – Ash Gray Proclamation

PRESS & QUOTES

Guillermo Sexo’s soon to be released LP Secret Wild is some sweet Indian-summer nectar for those longing for the dreamy dissonance that ruled the 90’s.. The fourth release from this Boston foursome shows the band tighten up the collective focus with their eyes on the prize of lingering melodies, crackling atmospherics and entrancing beats. + “Color The Noise” Mp3 DL   My Old Kentucky Blog – August 2011

Secret Wild, the band’s fourth album, combines disparate elements like dreamy acoustic strums, slamming postpunk and singer/keyboardist Noell Dorsey’s haunting warble….Yet Sexo spins a surprisingly cohesive blend, even with strong musical personalities. Elliott Anderson can throttle his Fender bass – Improper Bostonian – Annual round-up of Boston’s rising artists – August 2011

Secret Wild represents another leap forward and entertaining evolution in the sound that Guillermo Sexo has been refining for more than seven years now. –   The New England Deli – Album of the Month August 2011

Guillermo Sexo’s recently issued fourth full-length is doubly remarkable: not only is the Boston-based dream-pop quartet’s collection Secret Wild very good, but also it strongly underscores that the band is very good at doing more than one thing — no mean feat in today’s atmosphere of the Internet subjecting acts to harder scrutiny ever earlier in their careers, before they even figure out how to do one thing right….. the songs on Secret Wild resonate even more strongly, perhaps because of a heightened air of psychedelia shot through the music, or perhaps because of the rich production. It’s no matter — either way Secret Wild is one of the strongest releases to date in 2011. –  Clicky Clicky Music 7.24.2011

Guillermo Sexo graciously engineered a dream bill of local acts for its record release show last night at Precinct in Somerville, but the crowd was certainly at its densest for the main event when the Boston-based quartet commenced its set after midnight. Being feted was the band’s fourth full-length Secret Wild, an entrancing nine-song set that crackles with energy while charting middle ground between heavy atmospheric shoegaze (put on your good headphones and listen to the album closer “Industry” embedded below several times and see if it doesn’t somehow change you) and Led Zeppelin-styled English folk (“Secret Wild”). —- Release show review  Clicky Clicky Music Blog 7.17.2011

BIOGRAPHY

Guillermo Sexo is a band that combines psychedelic, shoegaze, avant garde and 60’s folk sounds into carefully crafted songs. Formed in 2004 by Reuben Bettsak- the original line-up released a self titled EP and the 2006 album, “Oh Wow.” After most of the original line-up moved away, experimental vocalist, Noell Dorsey joined forces with Reuben Bettsak and a new Guillermo Sexo chapter began.

The band released the epic, loud and varied Magic Lanterns in 2008, followed by Vivid Nights in 2010 which Love and Mathematics said “proves, they are also a band that have transcended their many influences and become a truly unique and creative force in the Boston rock scene- Love and Mathematics. Half the album is devoted to 3 minute fuzzed out rock gems, while the other half delves into sonic dreaminess. Vivid Nights was critically acclaimed and the video to their single, “Neon Lights,” was nominated for Boston Phoenix video of the year 2011.“ Visit the Vivid Nights One sheet page HERE.

Around the middle of 2010 the band recruited new members, Elliott Anderson on bass and Jay Wiexelbaum on drums and immediately set out to work on new songs. After playing the new batch of tunes out for a few months the band went back to the studio with longtime producer, Justin Pizzoferatto and created their newest offering, “Secret Wild” (2011). The release marks the first vinyl and T-shirt digital release for the group. Guillermo Sexo now has an unbelievable new drummer,Ryan Connelly(Mount Peru) and are touring the country late September/Early October.

Some of their collective influences are Hugo Largo, Roy Orbison, John Fahey, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Patti Smith, the Cocteau Twins, Guided by Voices, the Police, Love, Sonic Youth, Velvet Underground.
